Bexar County senior assistance programs

Several services are provided by the Bexar County Texas Senior Comprehensive Centers. The locations, and the resources they offer, can help residents that are age 60 and older as well as their spouses. Some of what may offered at these centers include free meals, food, transportation, recreational activities, and more. Locations may run workshops on medical or health care programs, financial literacy, and address other needs of the elderly in the community. Many also partner with, or take part, in the resources provided at local nutrition sites. The City/County Joint Commission on Elderly Affairs created these centers in the early 2000s.

A number of other organizations partner in the effort and may offer funds to pay for these centers. They include the City of San Antonio General Fund, Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, and well as the City of San Antonio itself. The reason this program was created was to provide a place where seniors could congregate to share meals, access needed services, and participate in different activities. Dozens of senior centers and nutrition sites operate in the county and in the greater San Antonio area. Some are even operated by the Parks & Recreation division. They offer comprehensive services and are open most weekdays.

What is available at each site may vary, but examples include a low cost, hot midday meal, computer classes, information on Medicare enrollment, and much more. Basically the Department of Human Services, Senior Services Division helps the city of San Antonio’s senior community lead active, engaged, and independent lives.

The Senior Nutrition Program (SNP)

is available at most sites. This will offer free boxes of food, groceries, meals, and government commodities. The goal is to ensure that seniors receive a healthy meal with the nutritional level provided for the needs of older adults.

Project Cool

operates during the hot Texas summers. The locations can provide the elderly a place to go to get out of the heat. In addition, as funding and donations allow, free fans or box air conditioners may be passed out to those that qualify. However this is a very limited program. Transportation may be offered around parts of San Antonio. This will generally be offered for things like doctor appointments, interviews, or some other more critical services. The senior centers will arrange specialized, door-to-door para transit services to persons, 60 years and older.
