The South Dakota Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program can provide low income families with rental assistance in the form of monthly subsidies or vouchers. A number of non-profit agencies and public housing authorities administer this program on behalf of the federal government and U.S. Housing and Urban Development department. Most of the support from this program goes to the elderly and low income families with children. Every month clients will receive a voucher that is used to pay a portion of their rent, and the funds are paid directly to your landlord or the owner of the housing unit. What happens is the South Dakota program will limit a clients rent to 30% of their total household income. The Section 8 voucher can also be used for a variety of homes, including apartments or private residences, provided they meet program requirements.
